Hades woke up to the gentle hum of the River Styx and the distant, mournful wails of lost souls. It was a typical morning in the Underworld, and he had a full schedule ahead. Persephone was still asleep beside him, her presence a rare and cherished comfort during her time away from the surface.
He carefully slipped out of bed, leaving a note for Persephone. He knew she’d appreciate a little breakfast when she woke up, so he instructed one of his loyal shades to prepare a platter of pomegranate seeds and ambrosia.
Hades’ first stop was the Hall of Judgment, where newly arrived souls awaited their fate. Today’s batch seemed particularly unruly. The Furies were already hard at work, their whips cracking as they maintained order.
“Lord Hades,” Minos, the judge, greeted him. “We have a situation. Several souls are contesting their sentences.”
Hades sighed. “Very well. Bring them in.”
The next few hours were spent listening to pleas and reviewing the lives of the departed. Some claimed innocence, others sought leniency, but justice in the Underworld was strict and impartial. Hades handled each case with a mixture of stern authority and quiet empathy, ensuring that each soul received their due.
Just as he finished, a commotion erupted outside his chamber. Hermes, the messenger god, burst in, looking uncharacteristically flustered.
“Hades! We have a problem,” Hermes panted.
“What now?” Hades asked, raising an eyebrow.
“It’s Cerberus. He’s… he’s got fleas.”
Hades groaned. “Of course he does. Let’s deal with it.”
Together, Hades and Hermes made their way to the gates of the Underworld. Cerberus, his loyal three-headed guardian, was indeed scratching furiously, his massive body writhing in discomfort. It took a combination of divine flea powder and soothing words to calm the beast.
As the day progressed, Hades attended to the various administrative tasks that came with ruling the Underworld. He signed off on decrees, resolved disputes among his subjects, and ensured the balance of life and death was maintained.
By mid-afternoon, he finally had a moment to himself. He retreated to his private garden, a secluded oasis where Persephone’s touch had brought life and color to the otherwise somber realm. He sat on a stone bench, enjoying the quiet and the sight of blooming flowers.
His solitude was interrupted by a soft rustle. He turned to see Persephone approaching, a gentle smile on her face.
“Busy day?” she asked, sitting beside him.
“More than usual,” Hades admitted. “But it’s better now.”
Persephone leaned against him, her presence a balm to his weary soul. They sat in comfortable silence for a while, simply enjoying each other’s company.
As evening fell, Hades and Persephone made their way back to the palace. The Underworld was quieting down, the souls settling into their eternal rest. Hades felt a rare sense of contentment. Despite the chaos and the challenges, he knew he could face anything with Persephone by his side.
“Tomorrow will be better,” Persephone said softly, as if reading his thoughts.
Hades nodded, a faint smile on his lips. “Yes, it will. Together, we can handle anything.”
And so, the Lord of the Underworld and his queen retired for the night, ready to face whatever the next day would bring.
